Bridging horizons: elevating ship-shore connectivity

Ashish Malik, managing director at Ardmore Shipping shares his views on the synergy between various shore-based and shipboard personnel in forming the bedrock of success and the corresponding strategic approach.

Let us understand the intricacies involved. The business units (vessels) continuously shift between locations and time zones, and the audience is not fixed (rotating crew). Today we have nine nationalities on board and maintaining effective communication with thousands of seafarers who are both on board and at home and overcoming cultural and diverse differences can be a challenge. And not to forget the information overload for seafarers today. While we have matured a lot in understanding these aspects,
undoubtedly, managing the above effectively provides the edge in achieving excellence in shipping.

So, what can we do? Embrace smart shipping, which involves changing how we communicate and effectively using the new means available. The aim is to simplify communication and have an open and transparent dialogue. Moreover, we aim to enhance the company culture and shape the right behavior using our core values. Achieving a climate of trust, transparency, and openness is not something that happens automatically; we need to put in the effort! We need to lead by example and follow the
procedures and policies. The key is to manage the teams and motivate them to be transparent, open, and honest with their reporting. Sometimes, things go wrong; it is unavoidable. When they do, it is important that communication is open and transparent. We have to build trust and be supportive during times of need.

Operating a vessel is not limited to handling the technical intricacies and is also linked to human connections and softer issues that shape the fabric of efficient shipboard operations. To enhance this, the first Starlink satellite communication system was installed in mid-2023. And with the entire fleet now equipped with this communication system, it has heralded a new era of connectivity for our vessels. Leveraging high-speed internet access, our teams can now engage in real-time video conferencing sessions with onboard crew members, facilitating seamless collaboration and knowledge sharing.
Whether discussing operational strategies or addressing crew welfare concerns, these virtual meetings bridge the gap between sea and shore, fostering camaraderie and synergy amongst all stakeholders.

Implementing the program ‘I Listen’ has proven to be a success. This allows the shipboard team to give feedback and allows us to take meaningful actions to support them. As an example, we received feedback regarding the consistency in personal protective equipment (PPE) quality, and now we are in the process of implementing a PPE catalogue with standardization in the supplies.

In conclusion, the human aspects and softer issues inherent in ship-shore connectivity form the cornerstones of excellence in shipping. By embracing diversity, leveraging technology, and fostering a culture of collaboration, we embark on a journey toward greater efficiency, safety, and sustainability in our shared endeavors.
